Bristol Channel - Severn Beach (again!)

It was time to try Severn Beach yet again! This time with a 12m tide, not huge, but better than 10m! It was a late tide so there was only two other people there fishing.

So myself, Neil and Dave headed for Severn Beach, and for once we actually got there nearly the correct way! We did for the way home! So now we know the correct way to go Severn Beach from Neil’s place.

Anyway, it was pitch black as you can see from the photos below!

Dave had already been wading into the mud fishing, he did have wellie boots on! The reflective strips on my new jacket were working well!

Neil looks nice and warm in his fishing suit, and collects some lovely clean water for washing our hands in!

Can you imagine how it is possible for a fish to see anything in that water! That was about 2 inches deep maximum! Look at the state of it!

Captain Crustacean catches his first “official” crab using a fishing rod and line! He was given a free Alton Towers like ride through the air into the sea! This is the first crab seen at Severn Beach!

Lyme Regis – The Return!!

Today saw the return to Lyme Regis for myself and Neil, for Dave is was the first time he had been for fishing.

Expectations were high, the weather was glorious, but the M5 put an abrupt halt to me and Neil’s journey down to Lyme! Just a mile and half from the J25 exit for Taunton we came to a grinding halt! We sat there for 3 hours, worse still in the shade of a ruddy great articulated lorry! I was dying for a pee too, after having 2 cans of Coke Zero during the trip! Luckily for food we were maxed out with 2 packets of beef Hula Hoops, and several packets of Petite Buerre biscuits. Eventually we got past the traffic, and it was Lyme here we come!

By this time Dave had nearly caught a bass, but it had got away when it jumped out of the water.

Here we have DT looking like a rock band front man, enjoying the lovely crystal blue waters (flat as a pancake too) of Lyme harbour.

IMG_9515

Neil looks happy, and little does he know, he will be later!

IMG_9516

Smiling, could this be the day I finally caught a fish?

 IMG_9519

Some tiddlers were about, and I was thinking that a cheap 99p net to scoop them out could put me in the No.1 spot in the fish league, but I am sure that fishing below 2 inches don’t count!

IMG_9520

Neil lowers the controversial “crustacean” device on the harbour outer wall (later with consultancy from me he moved to the inside wall where he caught something! See below)

IMG_9521

Hmm, a bumper haul, but is it legal. Crustacean rules to be consulted!

IMG_9524

Here we have it, just as we had begun to give up all hope Neil reels in a nice mullet! The fish was returned to the sea alive and flippin’! This catch improved morale by 10000% as we had been considering a move to a different venue, a move it would later transpire that would have been very unwise!

IMG_9529IMG_9531

Here we go… the fish started coming thick and fast, well at least for Dave and Neil they did, I was not quite so lucky in my position down the wall from Dave!

IMG_9530

Neil uses all of 1 thumb to restrain this moby dick sized monster, I was wondering whether to breadcrumb, deep fry it and serve with a slice of lemon!

IMG_9532 IMG_9533

More fishes for Mr.Bedford!

IMG_9536

This horrible crab was caught on Neil’s contraption, it had one leg and claw missing! Horrible manky old thing!

IMG_9537

The sunset was impressive, but it signalled the end of warm weather, and the temperature rapidly dropped as the sun disappeared!

IMG_9540 IMG_9543IMG_9538 IMG_9542  IMG_9544

Fish after fish after fish for Dave and Neil, sod all but crabs for me!

IMG_9545IMG_9546IMG_9547IMG_9548 IMG_9549 IMG_9550 IMG_9551IMG_9555

Yet more pictures of Dave and Neil constantly reeling in fish, in fact in the above picture Dave has bagged two on one rig! Well played, and a first for us fishing!

IMG_9552

Then all of a sudden the unthinkable happened, I caught a fish! Not a monster, but it was a fish, a fish!!! Check out that smile!

IMG_9557

This fish was special, as it was caught on Lidl Smokey Bacon bits. Although there were 10 other fish caught using rag worms before one bit the bacon! But they did go for it in the end!

Here you can see me with my second fish, yes 2nd! Also I am sporting the Sundridge En-Tec2 flotation suit that I purchased from Veals in Bristol. It was so warm, and had the added ability of life saving capabilities too!

Neil’s last fish of the evening….

So came to an end at 12am the best nights fishing ever, although there were only whiting and pouting. It was still fish, and better than blanking!

Total fish caught approx 58 between us!!!

ALL FISH WERE RETURNED TO THE SEA!
