Time Flies.....

Been so busy recently that I have not put anything on here at all!

Whats happened in last month....

  • Saw Thunder in Bristol, and did another Meet and Greet and got guitar signed
  • Car went in for big repair to clutch & flywheel (they left the engine cover off it when I got it back!!)
  • We got a Nintendo Wii from Amazon for £179.99 the week before Christmas, so f$%k you all the companies out there like the Dixons group who are trying to cash in on the popularity, I mean one of their offers included a pink PSP with it, what the feck??!!?? Money grabbing bastards, won't see me in their shops ever again!
  • Saw Thunder again in Rock City (Nottingham) for their annual Xmas Show, it was superb, and no fog this time for driving home!! Although I did have a kebab with no pitta bread, whats all that about!!
  • Emma's bedroom is painted and she is in there at long last!

I ought to put some pictures up here, and I will... I promise....

Happy New Year to all......

Xbox 360

Forgot to say 360 came back last week.

Spent all the time playing Call of Duty 4, wow what a game!

Emma's Bedroom

What seem's like a long time ago when I started it.... anyway enough of the past... the plasterer is coming tomorrow!!! That means all being well I can paint the walls pink for her, and get the electrician to finish off the sockets.

We will be going to Ikea this week to get a bed for her, and a mattress too (not Ikea as it's so damned expensive!).

She hopefully will be in there before Christmas all being well :-)

Ford Mondeo (current one)

My ongoing problems with the clutch on my Mondeo has finally been tracked down to the Dual Mass flywheel, which is apparently a common problem on the TDCi engine with Ford!

It's symptoms include the clutch slipping in all gears, sometimes when just putting your foot down. Also auto acceleration, which is mighty frightening when you take your foot off the gas and it keeps going, and accelerates with it too!

Still can't wait to get it back, as I am in an Astra 1.4 Club hire car, jesus is it gutless! The stereo is so tinny, I am sure my mobile phone's speaker has more bass!

At night I have never seen such a dark dash, there's just no sodding buttons lit up, cos it aint go no options! It's got windy windows in the back, WTF!!!!

Only plus is it's silent, compared to my Massey Ferguson beating clack clack London Taxi engine!

Thunder ... I am a lucky bugger!!

Cracking news!!! I am lucky enough to have won a pair of Meet and Greet tickets!! That's 2 years in a row, and I am not feeling at all guilty about winning them either, it will give me a chance to get my Fender Stratocaster guitar plate signed (as I couldn't find it last year!!).

Roll on Wednesday next week, for a cracking gig, and a superb meet and greet... photo's to follow

What's Been Happening

Update for this week....

Well British Gas let us down with the washing machine repair, firstly they turned up with no part, even though they knew which part it was. He rescheduled for Thursday, and guess what never turned up because he forgot to order the part. So he is due back Monday 12th, so we will see what happens!

Emma has been mega grumpy this week, don't know what is a matter with her.

I've been busy writing some custom provisioning software for work using VBScript/HTA.

My compensation of Wireless Headset and Call Of Duty 4:Modern Warfare, but no Xbox 360 still!!!!!!

Come on Microsoft, get the bloody thing back!

5 Nov 2007

Bournemouth City Council

I have paid my £30 fee for the Bournemouth CC parking offence.

I shall never darken their door again, bollocks to the bastards!

It must have cost them more in admin etc to reply to my appeal with all the printouts of photos of my car etc, bunch of Hitlers.

Stuff Bournemouth!!!

And For Your Troubles Mr.Smith

Got some good news today, for having 3 broken consoles Microsoft have offered me compensation, which was a surprise.

But the more suprising thing is the choice of reward

1 of 4 games (Viva Pinata, PGR3, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero)
or
Wireless Controller, Wireless Headset, Play N Charge Kit

I plummed for the wireless headset!

Nice one, saves £30!!

This Weekend We Have Been Mostly....

Well washing and trying to get clothes dry are up there high on this weekends most exciting jobs. Can't remember if I said the washing machine door fell off in my hand, just my luck eh!

British Gas are repairing it Monday (hopefully), as financially it's costing me a fortune at the laundrette, £3.80 a pop! Even then the clothes feel like they have been spun by hamster in a wheel rather than a high RPM washing machine.

So if it's broken (as it is 14 years old) we may plump for a new one, a Hotpoint WT960G or WT965A.

I got an order estimate of mid February for my new car, hell I don't mind....

Right back to missing my Xbox 360 now :-(

Toute a l'heure ...

31 Oct 2007

Boy oh Boy

Forgot to say that over the weekend and until Tuesday we all got a lovely sickness/stomach bug. I had the worst deal as I was up all night with Emma on Saturday, then I went to work Monday exhausted only to come down a bit odd at lunchtime, I only just made it to the sanctuary of my own bathroom at home by the skin of my teeth!!!

30 Oct 2007

Here We Go Again... 2nd Car Order!

Right, as previously mentioned I have now ordered another new car!

Vauxhall let me down, mucking about with delivery dates.

Interestingly the lead time for the Ford Mondeo is not actually that much longer than what Vauxhall were potentially offering.

Anyway, I have ordered a Ford Mondeo Titanium X 2.0 TDCi with the following options

  • Privacy Glass
  • DVD Touch Screen Sat Nav & 6 CD Changer
  • Parking Sensors
  • Solar Reflective Windscreen
  • Sports Pack
  • Bluetooth
  • Bi-Xenon headlights
  • Keyless Entry

It's ordered in Sea Gray with leather seats

26 Oct 2007

Oh I Forgot....

Bad news on Sunday evening my Xbox 360 (3rd replacement in 18 months) succum to the "3 Red Rings Of Death" syndrome!

It wasn't even powered on for more than about 5 minutes, the screen went blocky and then it was no more. So yet another 360 to add to the statistics of shafted ones, well done Microsoft for producing such a quality piece of kit. After all my Sony PS2 which is 6 years old has gone wrong loads of times, let me be precise, its 0 or ZERO times!!!!

So UPS have again another one to return to what must be an ever increasing EU mountain of crap magnolia dead Xbox 360's!

If it wasn't for the fact MS have set aside 2billion dollars to repair these things out of warranty I would not have bought a replacement! It gives you no faith at all in the console, as for their Elite, well they can stick that where the sun doesn't shine! The MS operative even boasted that there were no hardware failures with that console, great give me one then!!

On the upside they did mention compensation, so I asked for a working console...

I await the return of my "new" one.... to see how long this one lasts!

All Back To Square One...

After what seems like forever, I have now cancelled my order with Vauxhall for the new car. They just kept changing the dates, originally October, then Nov 5th, then late November.

When I telephoned Tuesday it was 7th December, at which point I have decided to cancel, and since then it was changed to 21st December! So well done Vauxhall for selling a car you cant actually supply, and wasting the last 4 months!

On a plus side the new Ford Mondeo has dropped on our car list in price, so I am now about to order the Titanium X model with all the whistles and bells.

Please dont let me down Ford!

Even Clarkson liked it, read the link below if your interested

Chris Garrett ... a genius and true friend....

Yesterday I made a nostalgic journey down towards the South Coast under difficult circumstances to attend the wake of a good friend and ex-colleague Chris Garrett.

I remember when I first met Chris, at Barclays in Trowbridge. I was there to cover for him at first, so never met him, but I then covered other ICL people at the time when they were not around. I thought he was stark raving mad when I met him!
He was always joking and making faces about people, it made me laugh. Even when he was being serious he used to burst out laughing at the end! I don't know what the customer thought of him, but they must have loved him, as he added so much fun into your day.

We shared a common interest in blagging swag from anywhere we could, mostly mp3 music and other bits of software. So we kept in touch about the sort of techie things in life.
We worked together at Westlands helicopters, at which point I found out more about his passion for music. I bought an electric guitar, and he gave me some lessons in the car park of Westlands.

During that time we spent time down at his studio in Sixpenny Handley listening to his music, and watching in amazement at his musical talents on so many instruments. He was a natural, and had a gift! I remember once, when he tried to get me stoned on "herbal" tea, which didnt work, although he said he'd put enough stuff in to knock out an elephant, he played Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues For You", it was awesome, and better than the original!
Nothing will take away mucking about at HQ Land with him, he'd be doing his pretend pipe smoking Monty Python walk behind some officer as he walked towards me in the corridors, I'd find it so hard to keep a straight face. They were priceless moments, he had such a brilliant sense of humour. He loved to pretend to mince around as well, which was always fun to watch.
I guess the most memorable of all occasions was staying at his and Allison's place for the Blandford music festival. Round 2 on the herbal front from Chris involved some rather nice chocolate (if I remember correctly) cookies, with "oats and seeds" in 'em.
I remember sitting at their kitchen table, and then all of sudden after 2 of these things I started getting the giggles. Man I laughed my way out of their house, down the steps, passed Wazzak the 3 legged cat (yes it's true!) and into Allison's Astra.
It was at this point paranoia set in, I began to focus on different parts of my body, my arms, my legs, my heart... what had I done, I became very frightened, believing I might wet myself or worse! They could see I was worried, but kept telling me it will be ok.
When we arrived I refused to leave the car, I felt safe in Alli's car, and didn't want to get out. After about 20 minutes they convinced me to get out, and I joined them at the festival. I don't remember a great deal other than being taken into the hall of mirrors which was unreal! OH and sitting in a tent listening to drum and bass type music and watching some laser pointer pen whizzing around. I refused to move from my spot thinking i couldn't get into any trouble if I did.
I don't remember driving home at all, just waking up feeling sick, and i was. I remember there was a huge black spider next to my head in the toilet, Chris said "Are you sure, or was it your imagination?". To this day, I don't know if it was or wasn't.
The next day just flew by, I lost track of time completely, as I was still feeling the effects of the cookies.
Chris helped me out a lot when i split from my ex-wife Michelle, he talked me through things on the telephone, he was a real rock at that time, along with Mark Willis.
Chris and Alli decided to move to Portugal in April 2002 so that Chris could earn money doing something he liked (music), it was at this point I lost contact with Chris and Alli sadly, as there email address changed, I moved house, got a new mobile number etc.
So it came as a massive shock to me to find out the Chris had died, and to find out that he had been back in the UK for about 18 months. I would have dearly loved to have seen him, and would have made the effort, no matter what, given the chance.
Chris leaves behind a ton of friends who adored him and thought he was a genius, family, Allison and his two children.

Chris I know you are a techie and a music man, but if you are reading blogs wherever you are then I'd like to say to you that every minute spent with you, were some of the best moments of my life. You were a true friend, and were loved by all, who could ever beat your Mick Jagger impressions when doing Angie!

I'll miss you forever, and look forward to meeting up with you when my time comes be it upstairs or downstairs! Maybe I will have learned to play Sweet Home Alabama by then!!

Rest easy mate, love your friend Duncan.

Chicken Vindaloo

That's my dinner for this evening, and is it me is it getting cold??

3:10 to Yuma

I actually enjoyed it, good to watch a western from time to time, they should make more Hollywood films about 'em.

Halo 3 Finished

Whoopee how exciting I finished Halo 3 today (with a little help in co-op mode)

Would I buy it again, errrm frankly no!

11 Oct 2007

3:10 To Yuma

It's a strange named film, I am about to watch it though.

Will update you all with my views..........

Game Of The Moment

Halo 3 in co-op mode

PGR4 Demo looks really good

Simpsons game looks outstanding

Industrial Strength Clasp

What are bra clasps made from? Because I'm sure that its the strongest material known to mankind!!

A Little Update About The Car!

Firstly I rang up about my car today, and guess what, Vauxhall haven't even started to build it yet! So for a car ordered in July, I may be lucky to get it by November (mid)! My hat is taken off to you Vauxhall, I just can't wait to receive my hand built carbon fibre sports car... or sorry I didn't order one, it was just a fookin Zafira!!!!!!

7 Oct 2007

Super exciting update

Nothing of any great interest occurred during last week or two, well nothing that I could put on here without someone knowing who they were.

Been busy installing openSuse 10.3 on my work laptop.

Looking to get a replacement for the broken PC, not sure whether to get a PC or to get a powerful laptop and let Catherine keep this one for her use.

Emma's been doing well at school, eating her dinners (the marvelous invention of the sticker charts!!).

I will put some pictures up here, as it is looking a bit sparse... back later with some pictures....

24 Sept 2007

Game Of The Moment

Been playing the COD:4 Multiplayer Beta a lot, excellent game highly recommend a purchase!

At the moment I am trying to complete the ridiculously hard Medal of Honor: Airborne !

CD70 France Sat Nav CD

Had a bit of a panic on yesterday when I bid and won a German Ebay item for the new car, a CD for GPS in France.

I bid on the item with not even looking to see if they would post it to the UK, nor how they wanted paying, nor if it would work in English.

Luckily for me all the doubts were unfounded, and all was ok!! I wait to receive the item.

Zafira Update..

I got an email from the Vauxhall dealer explaining that the expected date of my car had slipped to November 9th 2007. I won't hold my breath though, but happy to be proved wrong!

16 Sept 2007

Today I have been mostly playing

Ghost Recon 2

Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Online Beta

Ratatouille Demo (well Emma has been playing it!)

Call of Duty 4 Beta.... lucky me!

Managed to get on the beta for COD4 Online, to start with I found it impossible to get even 1 kill, now a few tries later I am finding it more fun. Managing to get 6 kills in one game!

It's looking like a superb game, I can't wait for it to come out!!

@Bristol with the "729" Club

Today we all went to @Bristol and had a fantastic day with the Honiton 729 Club that my mother runs.

It's for learning difficulty adults, and the mix of people is really varied! Everyone had a great time, including my little girl Emma and her cousins Esme & Kenny.

The Planetarium was really good, everyone from the club really enjoyed it. One of the members shouted out "Fish and Chips" to one of the questions from the presenter, the place was alive with laughter!

I recommend anyone to go to @Bristol it's really good and little ones through to old ones will enjoy it no end!

27 Aug 2007

Its Been A While

Hello everyone, no updates for ages because I have been in France (Im still here now).

I havent got much to add really, although I have managed to get a load of stuff done whilst out here such as

  • Edit digital video of Emma etc from 2004 onwards
  • Watch 1st series of Prison Break, and 8 of the second series
  • Do my bank accounts
  • Tag loads of MP3s (the end is finally in sight!!!!)

Bloody digital video camera is broken, just a black screen when recording. Luckily it appears to be an issue with Canon and they have offered to repair it free of charge (CCD fault across many models).

France in my opinion is no longer cheaper for loads of stuff, for example prior to the Euro a pack of Kronebourg bottled beers was just under 4 pound, now they are nearly ten euros, which is about 7 pound. No way has inflation increased it that much!!

Lots of stuff in the supermarket is more expensive, and I feel sorry for French gamers as the games and hardware is outrageous. Forget about buying any blank DVDs, I thought we had gone back in time 5 years when I saw the price!!

Roll on back to Blighty on Tuesday, land of the greasy food and decent TV.

9 Aug 2007

Dexter

Just finished watching Dexter Season One last night (I downloaded them all from the net).

It was a really good series, bit odd to start, so bear with it as the twists are pretty damn good.

I'm really looking forward to the second season.... although I have the first two already!!

Car Update #4

At long bloody last the car is ordered, had the call from the dealer to confirm the order. Delivery hopefully mid october, no more ropey tyre wear and the Ford Transit sounding engine :-)

8 Aug 2007

DIY Update

Floors all dyed now in Victorian Pine (including the cupboard).

Undercoat on all skirtings to go (including Knotting solution)

3 coats of varnish on Emma's floor and landimg.

Car Update #3

I'm getting really pissed off with this now....

Last week they needed to generate a new order, which was being done for Friday morning.
So I telephoned Monday, and surprise surprise it had all been done (well so they said).
So I waited for my confirmation email, and nothing arrives.

Today I have telephoned to be told that it needed a new order, even though yesterday it had been ordered again according to Leaseplan. So they must have lied right!

Anyway... I have been promised a phonecall before 2p.m with the order number so I can confirm with the garage that car is actually at last ordered.

I will update..... so stay posted

3 Aug 2007

Emma's Bedroom Update

I finished sanding the floor, and have started the exciting task of applying the Cuprinol "Victorian Pine" wood dye. It hurts your fingers applying it with the lint free cloth, but I am sure the end result will all be worth it :-)

Anyway a few pictures above...

Company Car Update #2

Still no sign of a confirmed order with the garage, stuck in the lease company's purchasing system. I can forgive them, as this is not the kind of thing they normally do, not!

I am meant to get confirmation today that a new order has been generated and sent to the dealer, I won't hold my breath!

28 Jul 2007

Thunder

Now it's about time I continued my one man crusade to bring the music of Thunder to all mankind.....

They are by far, the best live band I have seen (and I have seen a few), and their studio albums are superb (except one slightly ropey one called "Thrill Of It All").

I have seen them over 20 times now, and have the next gig lined up in November at the Carling Academy Bristol, followed hopefully by the Christmas show at Rock City, Nottingham.

Check out their website, and listen to some samples on iTunes

http://www.thunderonline.com

Errmmmm

Another weekend is here, and I have managed to do so little as usual in terms of DIY and decorating, there's so much more interesting stuff to do.

I noticed my mate is ahead on the Xbox 360 in a game we both bought, can't have that, but nor can I be bothered to do anything about it.

Catherine made me laugh tonight, she said she liked Wiltshire because it was like the countryside, to which I replied "That's because it IS the countryside". Had to try and explain the poor use of English, in the end she got it when I said "I like this Ford Mondeo, because it is a bit like a Ford Mondeo...", because it bloody is !! :-)

I watched Wild Hogs tonight, it was really good, great laugh! As for Die Hard 4.0, what the hell was anyone thinking with that jet fighter at the end, how unbelievable, they have taken away the naffest bit or airplane stunt's away from True Lies (Arnie)! Well done!!

Tried to convince a really cool friend in the office to get a DVD player with XVID/DiVX capabilities, so I can lend her and her hubby some movies... go on you know it makes sense! If you don't like it I'll buy it off you :-)

Anyone been watching Fonejacker? Cracks me up the Nigerian bank worker, no indian helpdesk this week, which is a shame (and a pet hate!).

Oh well into the last day of the weekend, let's hope next weeks work is altogether more exciting than the 5 days of last week.

Oh and Shelley buy that DVD player !!

26 Jul 2007

Yet another good egg leaves the office today... far too many recently, good luck to Barbara in her new job as a Surveyor's PA. You'll be missed by all the good ones in the office.

Who is next I ask.... let's hope it aint anyone I like this time!

Car Order Update #1

Hmmmm not too impressed today, I telephoned to see if there was a rough idea when it would be delivered only to find out LeasePlan had cocked up and not even sent the order through, 3 weeks wasted there!

It was a good job I called, otherwise I would have been getting it in '08 !!

Still can't complain, it is after all a company car.

Emma's Room

A few pictures of "work in progress" on Emma's room. Still sanding the floor before the dye and varnish.

Here are some of the room...

22 Jul 2007

Car Order

I forgot to say, I ordered the Vauxhall Zafira SRi Diesel in Moonland with all the options under the sun.

I'm getting the piss taken out of me at work for ordering a Vauxhall, but it was all I was looking for and fast to boot.

The Stairs

After what seems an eternity, we no have normal stairs in our house! Yes I know they still need painting and new carpet etc, but it's a whole lot better than the previous arrangement!
Here is a couple of pictures of our wonderful stairs, and well done to Paul for doing such a good job!

Sorry for no updates....

Sorry for the lack of updates recently, it's been a bit hectic in our house with some work being done.

Also good old VirginMedia have given such a crap service in the last couple of months, regularly losing the broaband connection for days at a time!! Oh and I pay £37 a month for their top package, but get bandwidth of less than 400KB !!

Did you know you get to call an Indian helpdesk now, oh and even better they charge you 25p per minute for it!! I ask you what is this great country coming to, offshoring everything to a country where it may be cheap, but you cant understand a bloody word!

End of rant ... for the moment, cable modem has been replaced... lets see what happens!

23 Jun 2007

Preparation H

Today has been all about preparing for the arrival tomorrow of Catherine's parents. We have moved beds and wardrobes around today, and I managed to get my finger crushed by a wooden Ikea box (it's the one every think's they ought to buy cos it's so cheap!). Anyway I can tell you it bloody hurt when the floor of the wooden thing lifted up and trapped my finger whilst carrying it.

All that aside, we went to see Charlotte's Web at the cinema with other parents for little Lily's birthday. Emma was reasonably well behaved for about 30 minutes, then she got fidgety!

It was the first time at the cinema, not sure it's something to repeat too often!

22 Jun 2007

Don't Stop Me Now

No holding me back today, the thrills of working for a large IT company just know no bounds!

Got an interesting call from Catherine today, her exact words....

"The dentist just called, and didn't leave a message. Do you know what they wanted?" to which I replied "No, because I don't have superhuman powers or can read people's minds from 22 miles away!"

Is it me, or do women ask some really daft questions sometimes, like "Where's my hairbrush?", as if a man would know.

Still last night I got accused of leaving a window open that she opened and I knew nothing about. Of course it was my fault, I should have known she'd open it during the day whilst I was at work!

Anyway, the new Mondeo seems to be very popular with the auto press at the moment, but it's stupid money on our company car list. So it looks like its a "fun bus" for me, I am over the hill and heading towards 40 as every year passes.

Tomorrow is off to Cineworld in Bristol to take Emma to a kids party, her first visit to the cinema, so it should be fun.

T-minus 2 days until Catherine's parents arrive at our house from visiting her sister in  Bath.

21 Jun 2007

The Company Car Dilemma ....

It's time for me to choose a new company car, this time for 4 years as a contract. My current car is a Ford Mondeo Zetec S Diesel.

Let me tell you this, it has eaten the front bloody tyres, so anyone out there thinking of getting a 18" wheel Mondeo with 224/40 R18 tyres be warned! I have had 7 sets during 62,000 miles. The longest set being the Continental's from new, the worst so far being Michelin. It has consistently lost about 10psi of tyre pressure every 2 weeks since the first tyre set were changed.

Anyway onto the new car, the two shortlisted are the

  • Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 CDTi Diesel SRi Exterior Pack
  • Mazda 5 Nav Sport

I am waiting for a test drive next week on the Vauxhall, although i did try the VXR model last week and nearly had a heart attack (boy was it quick!!).

If you have any views on the two cars, leave me a comment.

Day One

Here I am, 36 years old, 19 of which have been spent in the wonderful world of computers. Yet it is today I finally get a blog site going, cutting edge stuff for me eh!

Anyhowz the idea is that I will post some stuff on here from time to time, maybe something funny, maybe some family pictures, maybe I'll brag about how good I am at Forza Motorsport 2 on the Xbox 360.

This is not me, though it is my celeb lookalike, Max from Phoenix Nights... superb program... t'internet... garlic bread!
